A local LGBTIQ+ campaigner honored at The Queer Breakfast Club

Grangemouth’s own Elaine Moir, a tireless advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, was recently celebrated by The Queer Breakfast Club for her decades of dedication and activism. Elaine, who was crowned Community ally of the Year at the 2025 Proud Scotland Awards, joined the club’s Pride celebration on June 7th, bringing her signature warmth and energy to the event.

Elaine’s journey as an ally began decades ago at Falkirk Tech College, where she first volunteered with the Terrence Higgins Trust on World AIDS Day, distributing red ribbons and promoting safe sex awareness. Since then, she has become a recognised campaigner for queer rights, serving as a team leader for Pride Edinburgh and a guest liaison for over ten years. Elaine is  part of The Haus of Nunsense—the Scottish chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, where she performs as her drag persona Hench Barbiella

Her work is deeply personal: “I lost friends to suicide because there wasn’t acceptance or support for LGBTQ+ people in Falkirk when I was growing up,” she shared. “I wanted to change that.”

Earlier this year, her contributions were recognized at the Proud Scotland Awards, where she won the Community Ally category. Though she couldn’t attend the ceremony—Sister Alaska Lott from the Haus of Nunsense accepted the award on her behalf.

Elaine’s story is a reminder that allyship is not passive—it’s a lifelong practice of showing up, speaking out, and lifting others.
